PROCESS

How We Work
Good planning yields better results, and we know the design phase is the best time to explore ideas and compare possibilities. This ensures the final home or building truly represents the right solution for you.
As a general rule, most projects will go through the same basic design process, although timelines will vary depending on the scale and complexity of a project.
- Programming
- Schematic Design
- Design Development
- Construction Documents
- Construction Administration
In order to optimize each of these phases, we work collaboratively with our clients from the initial consultation all the way through the end of construction administration. We guide each client through the design process, keeping lines of communication open to demystify what can sometimes feel like an overwhelming process.
How we work
Good planning yields better results, hands down. At HESTIA Design Collective, we know the design phase is the best time to explore multiple ideas and compare possibilities to ensure the final built project truly represents the optimal solution.

Claire and Valerie work collaboratively with their clients from the initial meeting all the way through construction completion. They expertly guide each client through the design process, keeping lines of communication open and demystifying what can often feel like a confusing process with an overwhelming number of decisions to be made.

1. INITIAL CONSULTATION
Onsite consultation, up to two hours. This is an opportunity for HESTIA to learn about your project, for everyone to ask questions, and otherwise start getting to know each other.
2. DESIGN RESEARCH
Information gathering phase, to include a preliminary site survey, defining the scope of the project and the client’s design objectives, researching codes and any other relevant local restrictions.
3. SCHEMATIC DESIGN
Concept design phase to explore alternative site-specific building layouts and design strategies. By the end of the phase a general floor plan should be established that identifies the general arrangement of spaces and primary aesthetic direction for the project.
4. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Design refinement phase to better understand how the building functions and the way spaces relate to each other. Start thinking about how support systems (such as HVAC, lighting, plumbing, etc.) will integrate with the design. Identify key finish materials. By the end of the Design Development phase, the overall design should be largely set.
5. CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS
This phase consists of producing the fully detailed design documents that enable the contractor to permit, price, and ultimately build the project in keeping with the established design intent.
6. CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION
Periodic site visits to observe the construction activities ensure the contractor builds the project according to the original design intent. During this phase the design and construction teams will often collaborate to deal with any issues that come up and keep the schedule moving smoothly.
